Japan Lean Tour Day 2

On the second day of the Japan Lean Tour, we first headed to Yokohama to visit Nissan's Engine Factory and we were very honoured to meet Takumi Kurosawa, Nissan's master craftman of GT-R engines. So far there are only 5 GT-R master craftmen in the world.

After that, we took the Shinkansen bullet train to Nagoya and visited the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. Then we ended our day by having a great Shabu Shabu dinner.

Here are some pictures that highlight the day. Take a look!

Japan Lean Tour Fall 2015 - Day 1 Report

- Written by tour participant - Andy Thorne, Cameco Corporation

We woke up to rain on our first day in Tokyo. David and the team did a great job of flexing their plans and arranged a very interesting visit to the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno.

After eating lunch at a traditional Japanese buffet we were off to Oppama  to visit the Nissan motor company Ltd, Oppama car factory.

The tour started with a quick visit to their visitor centre where we were able to crawl over the three models they produce at the facility the Leaf, Juke and Cube as well as seeing many displays that helped us understand the history of Nissan and how some of the technology comes together to create this important product line for the company.

After a short overview presentation on Nissan which helped us understand the global reach of the company and some of the impressive business statistics it has generated over the years including reinventing itself with support from Renault allowing it to come back from the brink of bankrupcy.

Back on a bus for a tour of the port area where vehicles are loaded on large ships for delivery globally.

The highlights of the plant tour included:

- learning about Nissan business model including their corporate vision of 'enriching people's lives'

- seeing the use of practical Lean  examples including Kanban, 5S, Kaisen and visual management

- observing the use of AGVs to ensure production line is kept supplied with all necessary components so production workers can focus on building cars.

- observing the building and testing of vehicles at a rate of less than 1 per minute.

- seeing how this impressive company marries technology and culture to create world class business results.

We finished an awesome day of technical learning with a team dinner at a traditional Japanese restaurant which allowed us to reflect and have fun with our new Lean Sensei friends.

Lean Sensei Japan Lean Tour is only two weeks away!

Our Japan Lean Benchmarking Tour is the most popular Lean Tour we offer and Lean Sensei is the only organization in the world that includes a trip to Japan as part of the Lean curriculum. So far we have taken more than 600 participants to Japan.

Japan is a country like no other in the world. It built its economic power through manufacturing over the past several decades, earning a reputation around the world as the “Lean Specialist.” Even though many Lean best practices can be found throughout North America, truly serious Lean practitioners still find that Japan is the only place that showcases Lean implementation in its purest form. Lean principles permeate every aspect of daily life in Japan and are not limited to production or engineering environments. People who travel to Japan are fascinated and surprised by the fact that even places like restaurants and gas stations utilize Lean principles in creative ways. It is difficult to truly appreciate the impact of Lean thinking until you have seen and experienced Japan hands-on.

The program is intentionally designed to provide both educational and cultural exposure to Japan through various plant tours and historical sites. Tours are arranged with such big hitters as Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi, but also with smaller players that can showcase different levels of Lean implementation. Participants will also be able to experience Japanese culture and have the opportunity to do some sightseeing.

Your tour hosts David Chao and Jake Cameron are both bilingual, fluent in both English and Japanese. They will provide translating services to ensure that the nuances of Lean are not lost in translation and also provide cultural and lean insights throughout the trip.
